FAQs

New Vehicle Limited Warranty

How do I know what warranties are still available on my vehicle?

1) Every new GMC vehicle is backed by our GMC New Vehicle Limited Warranty to address any defects in material or workmanship occurring during the warranty period. In addition to the Base Warranty coverage, GMC has a 5-year/160,000 km (whichever comes first) Powertrain Limited Warranty with Roadside Assistance and Courtesy Transportation that is standard on all 2007 and newer models.

This change more correctly reflects the actual everyday driving usage of our customers.

2) Warranty information is specific to your vehicle and is based on the Original In-Service Date of the vehicle. If you would like warranty information specific to your vehicle, please have your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) available and contact the Customer Care Centre Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST.

Are light duty fleet deliveries included in the GMC Powertrain Limited Warranty?

Yes, with the exception of certain vehicles that are upfitted or created for special applications, such as limousine, hearse, and livery vehicles, which have warranties specific to these applications.

GMC sells several types of light duty chassis for use in applications such as ambulances, recreational vehicles and buses; are these vehicles included in the GMC Powertrain Limited Warranty?

Yes, but it is important to note that GMC warrants only the chassis; the manufacturers who build on the chassis may provide their own separate warranties for their special components.

Do I have to take my vehicle to a GMC dealer for maintenance to maintain my extended Powertrain Limited Warranty eligibility?

We highly recommend that you maintain your vehicle at a GMC dealership, as they have the specialized training and genuine GMC parts and accessories for your vehicle. In addition, we encourage you to keep detailed records and receipts of your maintenance history. Although you are not required to have your vehicle maintained at a GMC dealership, warranty repairs must be performed at an authorized GMC dealership.

Does the required maintenance of my vehicle change as a result of the GMC 5-year/160,000 km Powertrain Limited Warranty?

As a vehicle owner, you are responsible for the required scheduled maintenance as outlined in your Owner’s Manual throughout the warranty period.

Your Owner’s Manual provides a detailed maintenance schedule that you need to follow for your specific vehicle and driving habits. In addition, we strongly encourage you to keep detailed records and receipts of your maintenance history.

GMC Protection Plans - General

What is the manufacturer's base warranty period on my vehicle?

For GMC vehicles, the manufacturer's base warranty period is defined as 3-years/60,000 km (whichever comes first).

Certain GMC vehicles come with a supplemental Powertrain Limited Warranty:

- All 2007 GMC vehicles and forward have either a 3-year/60,000 km (whichever comes first) base warranty with an additional Powertrain Limited Warranty period of 5-year/160,000 km (whichever comes first).

My vehicle is covered by the manufacturer's base warranty. Why should I purchase a GMC Protection Plan?

The manufacturer's base warranty is for 3-years/60,000 km (whichever comes first) for GMC models. Most customers drive their vehicles more than 60,000 km in three years. Consider purchasing the GMC Protection Plan for your GMC vehicle:

  • If you drive more than 2,000 km monthly and/or plan to lease or finance your vehicle for more than 36 months, or
  • If you want to decrease your financial exposure to repair costs.

For vehicles with the supplemental Powertrain Limited Warranty, the GMC Protection Plan would provide you with coverage beyond the Powertrain Limited Warranty, with:

  • Coverage for Steering; Front and Rear Suspension; Brakes; Electrical and Accessories; Air Conditioning; High Tech Features; and Exterior and Interior components.
  • More added value with a price reduction of the GMC Protection Plan Total Plus (see Coverage and Benefits section on the FAQ page). Now this comprehensive coverage for your vehicle is even more affordable.
I thought GMC vehicles were good vehicles. Why do I need a GMC Protection Plan?

GMC vehicles are designed, assembled and tested to very high standards, but components used in today's vehicles are extremely complex and expensive to repair. Purchasing a GMC Protection Plan helps provide financial security against the rising costs of unexpected repairs. Today's GMC Protection Plan will help protect you against future costs for covered repairs.

I purchased a vehicle service contract on my current vehicle and never used it. Why do I want to purchase another service contract?

Congratulations — your current vehicle is performing as expected. You have not been inconvenienced or made responsible for expensive repairs. Vehicle Service Contracts are similar to warranties or auto insurance. You certainly hope you will not have to use it, but you do not want the risk or uncertainty of paying for an accident repair or theft. By purchasing a GMC Protection Plan, you transfer the uncertainty and financial risk of expensive, covered repairs to the GMC Protection Plan.

When does a GMC Protection Plan begin?

The term and kilometres of coverage is calculated from the Factory In-Service Date and zero (0) km.

When does a GMC Protection Plan end?

Vehicle Service Contracts purchased will clearly state when a contract begins and ends. The GMC Protection Plan purchased will terminate or expire at the end of the time and kilometre term selected (whichever occurs first), from the date the vehicle was first put in service (Factory In-Service Date) and at zero (0) km. The term of the Vehicle Service Contract includes the Manufacturer's base warranty.

What type of plans and coverage levels are available?

GMC Protection Plan offers several levels of Vehicle Service Contract coverage.

Powertrain Plan — Essential protection covering three major assemblies (gasoline/diesel engine, transmission and transaxle, front and rear-wheel-drive assemblies) for parts and labour costs, as well as Alternate Transportation and Towing for covered repairs.
