ABOUT DRIVER ATTENTION ASSIST

Driver Attention Assist^† can provide alerts if it detects you’re distracted or drowsy. If the system detects severe drowsiness, it will present you with options such as phoning a friend, opening a playlist or navigating to the nearest place of interest so you can safely continue your journey or stop to rest if needed. If the system detects you've fallen asleep, it is designed to slow your vehicle to a stop in its lane and call an OnStar® Advisor^† to contact emergency services. 

Driver Attention Assist automatically turns on when you turn your vehicle on, unless you’ve disabled it in the Settings menu. Your vehicle must be in forward motion for this feature to work. 

Driver Attention Assist uses cameras to warn you when it detects that you may be tired or distracted. It looks for signs of high levels of fatigue, such as yawning, long blinks or repeated blinking. It is also designed to detect signs of distracted driving, such as long glances away from the road. 

The camera and light bar sensor on your steering wheel need to be able to see your face for this feature to alert you. Don't cover them if you want to use this feature.  

Depending on how drowsy the system detects you are, you may get these alerts:

• Level 1: You’re aware tired and need some effort to keep awake (e.g., by playing music, rolling down the windows, etc.). 
  • You’ll see a yellow coffee cup icon in your cluster display and hear a chime (or feel a Safety Alert seat pulse).
• Level 2: You’re showing signs of severe exhaustion and are fighting to stay awake or drifting in and out of sleep. 
  • You’ll see a red coffee cup icon in your cluster display and hear several chimes (or feel Safety Alert seat pulses).
  • You’ll see options asking you if you’d like to take a break, call a friend or navigate to a nearby point of interest (e.g., coffee shop, hotel, gas station, etc.).
• Level 3: If the system detects you’ve fallen asleep or are continually looking away from the road, it is designed to take action to help keep you and other drivers safe. 
  • If you don’t respond to the system’s alerts, it will consider you unresponsive. 
  • It will turn the Automatic Emergency Braking†, Forward Collision Alert† and Lane Keep Assist† features on if you had turned them off. 
  • The system will wait a short time to give you the chance to take control of the vehicle to override alerts.
  • Taking control of steering, pressing the accelerator or brake pedal or accepting the driver display message will override the feature. 
  • If you don’t respond, the system will slow your vehicle down until it’s stopped in your lane.
  • The feature will then call an OnStar® Advisor to contact emergency services. It will also turn on your hazard lights.

When your vehicle is in forward motion and travelling above activation speed and Attention Alert is active, Driver Attention Assist looks for distracted driving by tracking your eye gaze location. 

When the feature detects you’re distracted, you’ll receive a message in the cluster display that says, “Distraction Detected Keep Eyes on Road” and will hear a chime or feel a Safety Alert Seat pulse (if equipped and selected in the Alert Type menu). 

If you continually look away from the road, the system will consider you unresponsive and you will get the Level 3/unresponsive alerts. The system will slow down your vehicle as described earlier. 

This function is disabled when Super Cruise^™†capability (subscription required) is active since Super Cruise has a dedicated attention alert strategy. 

If your hands are in the way of the camera or your eyes are otherwise obscured, neither Drowsiness Detection nor Attention Alert will work as designed.  

Drowsiness and Attention Alert can be customized through the vehicle Settings menu, under Driver Attention Assist.
